There is a wide range of motherboards and central processing units (CPUs) on
the market today. Choosing a suitable motherboard for you is not a daunting task and
you just need to have an idea of how you plan to use your new computer.

How do you plan to use your computer motherboard?
The first element to consider is how do you plan to use
your computer. If you are going to be using it for fast and furious video
games, then you should consider getting a motherboard that will support a
lot of memory and a very fast processor. Video games require and push a
systems performance envelope, so getting the right motherboard and CPU for
this application is very important.
On the other hand, if you are going to using
business applications like word processing, spreadsheets and surfing the
net, then you can utilize a motherboard with a less robust set of
specifications. I recently built a system with an AMD 700Mhz processor with
512Mb of RAM that works just fine. It is very fast with the XP operating
system and allows great performance from my imaging software (Adobe
Photoshop).
The point is--you don't need to get the
latest and greatest thing on the market and spend extra money for it when
you really won't be utilizing it. Yes, the fastest processor on the market
will make your system run faster. But, overall, it may be so insignificant
you do not even notice the difference from a much more cost effective bundle
of motherboard and CPU. That brings up the next element to consider.
Purchase the Motherboard and CPU separately or
bundled?
If you are not a seasoned computer builder and have
experience putting compatible parts together, then I highly recommend
purchasing the motherboard and CPU bundled together. This will save you a
lot of time and grief. Plus, buying them together usually includes the
necessary cooling accessories needed to make sure the CPU doesn't burn up
and fry the first time you apply power. Also, since retailers can "cut you a
deal" on a bundle rather than separate units, it is usually less expensive
to buy them together. Trust me. If you are building a computer for the first
time or you are not comfortable buying separate parts for the motherboard
and CPU, get them bundled together.
